About Letter & Line: While the focus of this blog is on art and books and bookish things with an international bent, talk of food, animals, travel, culture and craft may very well make it into its pages. Regular posts include:

  • Awards: International literary prizes and awards
  • Book Notes: Non-review book reviews
  • Literary Events: Events in the Greater Boston Area, mostly.
  • Oulipo-mania: A new series focused on Oulipo and Oulipian literature.
  • Translate This Book: Sometimes, I’ll come across an excerpt of a book that hasn’t found an English-language publisher. This is my plea to the interwebs.
  • Week in Translation: Links to international literature in the news

About Me, Part I: I’m a reader. And a large part of what I read is literature in translation. Why? Well, there’s that 3% statistic that points to the sad state of international literature in the United States. Statistics aside, I believe that our literary culture is all the more richer [magical realism! Oulipo! one-sentence novels!] with fiction from around the world.

I gravitate toward novels that can only be described as expansive, YA, literary fiction, short stories. Bonus points if it makes me laugh. Sometimes all that matters is that, irregardless of form, the story makes you feel like you’ve been punched in the guts.

About Me, Part II:

  • 9 to 5: Special Sales | Marketing | International Sales | eBooks
  • Offline: Knitter | Reader | Slow Jogger | Francophile | Art Enthusiast | Lover of french fries and truffles
  • Online: Twitter | Goodreads | Tumblr | Pinterest

Review Policy: I am open to receiving galleys and books for review. I prefer ebooks (ePub or PDF) whenever possible.

    Hi Gina,
Found your blog via Bookblogs.ning….I’m a huge fan of Chad Post, Words without Borders, and Archipelago Books. Sounds like we have similar taste. I’m currently hosting a Scandinavian Reading Challenge as well as an upcoming Eastern European Reading Challenge (for all translated works). I think you’ll find lots of readers with similar interests. Come visit, and I’ll be sure to keep up with your interesting reviews. BTW, Goodreads has a group for fans of translated literature too.

    Hi Amy,
I just signed up for the Scandinavian Reading Challenge. I’m very excited to have that extra push! Thanks for the tip about Goodreads–I hadn’t even thought to look for groups there.
    See you on the ning!

H’mar is also used for reprimand! LOL :)

Thanks for linking to my site. Translated books are my preferred genre, and I would add your blog to my feed now.

Hah, I had no idea! Which language?

Not a problem, I don’t remember how I stumbled on to your blog but I loved the Malaysia book list.

    Dear Gina,

You’re one of our followers on Twitter, and I myself have enjoyed looking back at all the translated lit stuff you’ve covered, as that happens to be my burningest book-passion as well.

Right now we’re pulling together a project called “Lifecycle of a Book,” which is a sort of info-collage from the perspectives of 10 different young people in book business across the country. We’re looking for other bloggers to pitch in in different ways, and  would love to have the honor of including you in some way. Have you any interest at all? I won’t go into all the gory details here, but if you want to, I’d be thrilled to be in touch via email at elisabeth@publishingtrends:disqus .com.

(I also have several lit-in-translation questions get your thoughts on, but won’t tiresomely take up more space here.

    Many thanks
